Blossom Rock Pioneers: Dwan and Steven

Meet Dwan & Steven. He’s an Arizona native, she moved back to the state from South Carolina, and now they’re planting roots in Blossom Rock as a newly married couple. Read on to see the very special place they picked to tie the knot, and how they’re planning to get involved in the community.

What brought you to Arizona?

Dwan: I previously lived in Arizona for my job, and I missed it so much that I had to move back!

Steven: I’m originally from Maricopa County.

Why did you choose to make Blossom Rock your home and what do you enjoy about living in the community?

We wanted a neighborhood that offered lots of walking paths, amenities, and a sense of community where people can get to know one another. We enjoy the many parks in Blossom Rock, and we also love the coordinated activities — we recently attended the Mine Wine Night and it was awesome!

Tell us a bit about yourselves.

Steven: All I know is Arizona, so all my memories are from here. I’ve seen areas that were once open desert, transformed into malls, shopping centers, movie theaters, and new homes. I’ve enjoyed many of Arizona’s lakes and outdoor activities like fishing, boating, camping, waterskiing, and let’s not forget the Salt River for tubing. I’m a father of five — four sons and one daughter — and I’m also a grandfather of five wonderful grandchildren.

Dwan: I’m originally from Charleston, South Carolina and I work from home full-time in the insurance industry. I’m an avid crafter and love donating my projects to various organizations and businesses. I’m the mother of two sons, Dominic (18) and Charles (13), and we also have pet schnauzers and a terrier mix.

We heard you were recently married at Painted Sky Park in Blossom Rock — congratulations! What inspired you to get married at this location and what are some of your favorite memories from the big day?

We got married at Pained Sky Park on 12/3/24.  We decided to get married there since we’re starting our new life together at Blossom Rock. We felt it was fitting to say “I do” at one of the best spots in the community! One of our favorite memories of that day was at sunset, viewing the beautiful fountain with the colorful Arizona sky as the backdrop.

How have you gotten involved in the Blossom Rock community and how are you looking to stay engaged?

We had a wonderful time meeting our new neighbors at the community painting party. We’re also looking forward to getting involved with volunteering and community outreach, couples’ activities, going on trails, hosting outings and trips for seniors, and participating in farmers markets.

What do you think makes for a strong community and what characteristics do you value in your neighbors?

It’s important to have activities that are inclusive for all residents, and to highlight neighbors as a way to get to know one another and encourage kindness, grace, and understanding. It’s also helpful to have a platform to support small businesses and services in the community.

What’s an interesting fact your neighbors might not know about you?

Dwan: I was a police officer in South Carolina and I’m an adoptive mom.

Steven: I volunteered for a few years feeding and protecting the wild horses near the Salt River.

If you have a great story to share or know a neighbor who’s making an impact in the community, we’d love to hear about it. Tell us in this short form and we might just feature you (or your neighbor) in our Blossom Rock Pioneers blog series.
