Summer in Blossom Rock means sunshine, pool days and stunning desert sunsets. It also means triple-digit temperatures, higher utility bills and a little extra attention to our homes, yards and neighbors.
Here are a few simple ways to make the most of the season.
Keep your cool
Let your ceiling fans do the work
Set ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise during the summer for a cooling breeze. Just remember to switch them off when you leave the room. Fans cool people, not spaces.
Keep the sun outside
Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day to block direct sunlight. Your air conditioner will thank you.
Beat the heat
Try running the oven, dryer or dishwasher early in the morning or later in the evening when outdoor temperatures are lower. Your home will stay cooler, and your AC won’t have to work as hard.

Give your AC a hand
Clean or replace your air filter every one to two months to keep your system running efficiently and extend its life.
Set it and save
A thermostat setting of around 78°F while you’re home offers a good balance of comfort and efficiency. Raise it a few degrees when you’re away, or consider a smart thermostat for even greater savings.
Take care of your pets
Protect those paws
Sidewalks and pavement heat up quickly in the Arizona sun. Walk pets early in the morning or after sunset, and test the pavement with your hand before heading out.
Keep fresh water available
Whether indoors or outdoors, make sure pets always have access to cool, clean water throughout the day.

Water wisely
Summer is tough on desert landscapes. Check that your irrigation timer is adjusted for the season so your plants receive enough water during extreme heat.

Summer gatherings are part of the fun. Please be mindful of outdoor music and noise, especially during the evening hours.
Leave shared spaces better than you found them
Whether you’re enjoying the parks, trails or lake, please pick up after yourself—and your four-legged family members.

Extreme heat can make even routine yard work difficult. If you notice a neighbor who could use a little help, a quick check-in or helping hand can go a long way.
